Description:
The Pour:
This beer pours a slightly cloudy light golden brown, a fair amount of head formed, but because I was not using the correct Duvel tulip glass the level of presentation that I achieved was not up to standard of what you would get when using the correct glass. That in mind I tried to pour this beer in the manner that Duvel recommend which is to hold the glass a 45o for half the bottle without touching the glass, then straighten the glass and pour the rest of the bottle into the centre of the glass, if using a correct Duvel glass which has a ‘D’ inscribed into the base this creates a tornado of carbonation bubbles which help maintain the head for a longer period of time, even without the correct glass the head form and provided a long lasting head, with plenty of lacing down the glass.
The Nose:
The nose has what I will describe as apparent lemon citrus smells and a touch of spiciness from unusual combination of hops used in this beer. There are hints of what might be apples and pears, and considering the 8.5% of alcohol content there is supervising little indication of this on the nose.
The Taste:
The first thing that you get when starting to taste Duvel is a hit from the high amount of carbonation that it contains, this help to make this beer a very crisp and refreshing drink. After this comes a touch of spiciness almost like coriander in nature, along with the yeast and bready malt are fairly dominate. Under these there are loads of fruit which reminds me almost of a dry white wine in nature, with a combination of grapes, lemon, apple and pear, which have a slightly peppery spiciness layered through them. These is hint and touches from the yeast and spiciness in the after taste. As with the nose you hardly notice the 8.5% of alcohol content
Accompanying Food:
Duvel is a beer that would be suitable for accompanying food which has a slight but not over powering spiciness about them, such as some salami’s and hams with bread and cheese.
Recommended:
I would definitely recommend Duvel to others as this is a top quality Belgium beer, with a lot to offer most beer drinkers, with its complex taste and flavour. The only downside is the price which is slightly on the high side, I know for one I will be purchasing this again.
